The Blindspot of Containment: How Western Myths Shape the AI Race

If even the solid ground beneath our feet can be "wrong"—that is, if the common sense and belief we once firmly held, that "the ground is solid, immovable, and eternally stable," turns out to be nothing but an illusion—then what else in this world is left to be certain of?

This is not a nihilistic philosophical inquiry, but the fundamental cognitive crisis that everyone must confront in this era of transition.

The "solid ground" is a metaphor for the common sense we take for granted, the unquestionable beliefs we hold, and the "universal consensus" that Western society has long relied upon for survival.

When the rules of yesterday start to fail, and the geopolitical and technological landscapes undergo a violent realignment, we suddenly discover that the "solid ground" we once took as absolute truth is actually shifting tectonic plates. This collapse of cognitive consensus brings an unprecedented sense of weightlessness and a crisis of trust to the entire system.

To cope with the deep anxiety brought by the shaking of the underlying order, the West has constructed a seemingly solid wall of defense—technology containment against China. But this wall is not just a physical isolation of computing power and equipment; it is a "cognitive wall" built on arrogance and bias.

To see the true nature of this race, we must first dismantle this wall and analyze its underlying cognitive myths.


I. The Western Myths and the Cost of Ignorance

The Western narrative on China’s development is extremely convenient and comforting. In their mainstream consensus, the logic of Chinese growth is crudely reduced to four tags:

  1. "China’s growth is solely fueled by Western and American capital investment; there is nothing special about it." Deep Analysis: If capital injection alone could buy modernization, why did trillions of dollars in Western aid and investment to Latin America, Africa, and South Asia after WWII fail to manufacture another industrial giant? Capital is merely fuel; it must be fed into an engine capable of converting it into real capacity—a vast infrastructure network, transactional channels with minimal friction, and a highly organized workforce. Ignoring the engine to focus on the fuel is reversing cause and effect.

  2. "China's development relies on the destruction of human rights and the environment." Deep Analysis: Any early-stage industrialization (including the 19th-century West) experiences the pains of brutal growth. But you cannot support a modern, complex economic system containing high-tech industries like electric vehicles, advanced communications, and large AI models solely on low-cost labor exploitation and pollution. High-end development relies fundamentally on systemic efficiency gains, a massive educated population dividend, and long-term compounding of public infrastructure.

  3. "China's growth is entirely based on the theft of Western intellectual property." Deep Analysis: In the catch-up stage, imitation and copying are the standard paths for latecomers (like the 19th-century US copying British textile tech, or early 20th-century Japan and Germany). But you cannot "steal" your way into becoming the global leader in LFP batteries, ultra-high-voltage power grids, and ultra-large-scale supply chain integration. True innovation is not just a patent code line in a lab; it is the systemic capability to scale, commercialize, and deploy technology at speed and low cost.

  4. "China's development is driven by large-scale overseas dumping of low-priced goods." Deep Analysis: What the West defines as "dumping" is physically the result of China's powerful "industrial cluster effect." When tens of thousands of component suppliers for a product are concentrated within a 50-kilometer radius, the resulting logistics efficiency and speed of collaboration cannot be replicated by any government subsidy. This is the systemic dividend of physical distance collapse, rather than simple low-priced dumping.

This narrative is highly popular in the West because it is simple, aligns with Western moral superiority, and costs zero cognitive effort.

But analyzing a complex economy of 1.4 billion people—understanding its ultra-dense supply chain networks, low administrative friction, and massive pool of engineers—requires an intellectual and cognitive cost that is simply too high for the average commentator to bear.

Because the cost of understanding is too high, the West chooses to bypass it entirely, opting for instinctive defense: "Since I don't understand it, and I don't want to invest the resources to figure it out, I will simply block it and deal with it when I absolutely have to."

This defensive mechanism of "cognitive outsourcing" functions like closing one's eyes and plugging one's ears, leading the West to believe that a hidden threat does not exist. But the physical laws of geopolitics and technological evolution never operate according to moral scripts written by humans. To see the true competitive landscape, we must perform a fundamental cognitive leap: completely decoupling value judgments from factual judgments.


II. Fact vs. Value: The Epistemological Split

This quote originates from Chapter 5 of the Tao Te Ching: "Heaven and Earth are ruthless; they treat all things as straw dogs." (天地不仁,以万物为刍狗) Over centuries, this line has often been misinterpreted as "heaven and earth are cruel, treating all things like worthless trash." But Lao Tzu's original meaning was precisely the opposite: Heaven and Earth are absolutely impartial and objective; they hold no subjective moral bias, carry no personal favoritism, and treat all things equally, allowing them to flourish or perish according to natural laws. "Straw dogs" (刍狗) were dummy dogs woven from straw for sacrificial ceremonies, treated with great care before the ritual and discarded without emotion afterward. Heaven and Earth treat all things with the same objective indifference.

Objective system rules never care about human moral consensus. Indeed, in the face of geopolitical and technological competition, the biggest mistake the West makes is completely confusing "factual judgments" with "value judgments."

Media and policymakers constantly chant: "dangerous, evil, unsafe, a battle of democracy vs. autocracy." This is purely a value judgment—it only answers "do I like it?" or "does it fit my moral framework?"

But the survival race is ruthless. You must operate on factual judgments—"how does this machine actually run at high speed? What problems is it solving?"

The West prides itself on its correcting mechanism (self-reflection and system checks). While this is a great systemic advantage, correction is not the engine of development; development itself is. If a car only has sensitive brakes (a correcting mechanism) but lacks a powerful engine (the engine of development), it is destined to remain stationary.

If an "authoritarian" system is able to establish a highly efficient feedback loop through high centralization and avoid catastrophic mistakes for a long time, it will steadily accumulate absolute physical advantages in the real survival race. You cannot win this evolutionary game in the physical world by relying on moral condemnation or constantly accusing your opponent of "acquiring wealth illegitimately."

"Language and belief aside, reality does not exist." If the Western belief system is just a self-congratulatory echo chamber, truth will lose its universality.

This disregard for objective physical laws is pushing the West down a self-contradictory path. If we acknowledge that the core of systemic competition lies in its underlying efficiency engine, then we must ask: what is the physical foundation upon which the Western system survives? The answer is absolutely not defensive containment, but extreme openness.


III. Openness is the Physics of Survival

Why is blocking China's technology development the wrong path for the United States?

Because the foundation of America's survival is not control; it is openness.

Openness is an efficiency engine. It attracts the global talent pool, absorbs external energy, and self-organizes solutions under pressure. Conversely, containment means building a closed system. According to the laws of thermodynamics, a closed system inevitably moves toward unavoidable entropy increase, decay, and over-crystallization.

If you lock out Chinese talent, graduates from around the world, and cross-border tech founders under the banner of security, the West is actually building a wall that suffocates its own vitality. Once openness is abandoned in favor of self-closure, the line of defense degenerates into a cage.

“常无欲以观其妙。常有欲以观其徼。”

This quote originates from Chapter 1 of the Tao Te Ching. Lao Tzu reveals two fundamental perspectives for observing the world and formulating strategy:

  • "To be without desire to see its secrets" (无欲以观其妙): This requires us to cast aside subjective desires, preferences, and moral judgments ("without desire") to observe the essential mechanism and underlying dynamics of things ("secrets/mysteries") with absolute objectivity. In a technology race, this means stripping away moral superiority to coldly perceive the opponent's underlying supply chain efficiency, infrastructure dividends, and organizational vitality.
  • "To have desire to see its boundaries" (有欲以观其徼): This requires us to look at the world with specific strategic intent and purpose ("with desire") to observe the borders, limits, and manifestations of things ("boundaries"). In a competition, this demands that we clearly identify the limits of the opponent's capabilities, technological red lines, and geopolitical thresholds, so we can formulate precise strategies.

You must look at the competitor without the desire to judge them (to see their secrets) and with the desire to compete (to see their boundaries).

But in any strategic game, we must confront the opponent's strongest logic, otherwise openness is merely a naive humanistic illusion.


The Gamified Protocol: Reclaiming the Open Mind

In a world of transition, the winner is the one who sees reality clearest.

  1. Audit Your Blindspots: Force yourself to separate your value judgments from your factual analysis. Do not assume your competitor's system cannot function because you dislike its morals.
  2. Protect the Commons of Talent: Do not let compliance fear shut out the global flow of builders, graduates from around the world, and cross-border creators.
  3. Double Down on Openness: Build systems that win by absorbing energy, not by building walls.

This is the ultimate protocol for tech sovereignty in the AI era.
